Burning Spear The African Postman
Burning Spear
benannt nach dem Ehrennamen des kenianischen Ex-Präsidenten Jomo Kenyattas,
gehört nach Bob Marley zu den wichtigsten Botschaftern des Reggae.
1969 gründete der damals 21-jährige Winston Rodney in Kingston,
Jamaika seine Band, die im Kern nur aus ihm bestand.
Geboren wurde er 1948 wie Bob Marley fast zeitgleich in St. Ann,
wo auch das religiöse und ideologische Vorbild Marcus Garvey herstammte.
Seine ersten Aufnahmen machte Rodney im legendären Studio 1 von Clement Dodd.
Es waren politische Roots - Reggae - Botschaften, von denen Burning Spear
bis heute keinen Millimeter abgewichen ist.
Anfangs lief es kommerziell nicht sonderlich gut, doch Rodneys Beharrlichkeit
und Konsequenz ließ in den 70ern zum Schauspieler (Rockers) und Reggae-Star aufsteigen
und der ist er im Jahre 2003 immer noch.
